Key Achievements in Malaria Elimination Across the Greater Mekong Subregion (2014–June 2024) 28.11.2024

The fight against malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) has been marked by remarkable progress, demonstrating the power of collaboration and innovative health solutions.

UNOPS Asia Regional Health Cluster (ARHC), as the Regional Principal Recipient of the Global Fund-supported Regional Artemisinin-Resistance Initiative Towards Elimination of Malaria (RAI), has played a pivotal role in advancing malaria elimination efforts across Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

As the Regional Principal Recipient, UNOPS Asia Regional Health Cluster (ARHC) has managed US$560.1 million for 2014-2023 to accelerate the elimination of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria in the five GMS countries. The RAI was expanded for three years (2024–2026) under the fourth phase, the RAI4-Elimination (RAI4E), with a grant approval value of US$146.3 million. The total grant value of the RAI grants from 2014 to 2026 is US$706.4 million.

Working in close partnership with national malaria programs and sub-recipients, UNOPS ARHC focuses on increasing access to malaria services for hard-to-reach and border populations, strengthening surveillance systems, and supporting case management through trained health volunteers and community malaria posts.

Key Achievements (2014–June 2024):

  • 62.9 million+ people tested for malaria
  • 2.7 million+ people treated for malaria
  • 33.8 million+ insecticide-treated bed nets distributed
  • 27,000+ volunteers trained, with malaria posts established

These milestones highlight the strong commitment to eliminating malaria in the GMS region. They have shown important progress in controlling and eventually eradicating malaria. UNOPS ARHC remains focused on advancing efforts for a malaria-free future.
