Political, business, academic and civil society leaders and private sector representatives from the ten ASEAN countries met in Hanoi in Vietnam on 11-13 September, 2018. There, they discussed existing and emerging challenges and opportunities that face the region. Tackling malaria was a key topic on the agenda.
“The fight against malaria is at a critical point. Nothing short of an all-hands-on-deck approach will suffice as we work to eliminate malaria in the ASEAN region. Through our platform, the Forum supports innovative public-private cooperation required to realize this vision,” said Vanessa Candeias, Head of the Global Health and Healthcare System Initiative at the World Economic Forum.
The Global Fund, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and APLMA launched a new partnership for health financing. The initiative, known as “Blended Finance for Impact”, will generate and increase funding for tackle malaria and address other health care needs. At the same event, ADB launched a Regional Health Fund in lines with the objectives of the Blended Finance for Impact initiative.
A session titled ‘Stamping out malaria’ outlined why some rapid shifts in financing approaches and public–private partnership are so vital.
